MUIN (pronounced: em, you, aye, en) is a unsettling video that coined an editing structure which Collins continues to work with (see: RR / PH / 19c. Lit. Det. 2009).
Appropriating the structures and techniques of television, the 4 ‘episodes’ of MUIN follow a strict but familiar format; ‘Previously On’ or prelude, pose to camera; an edited ‘title’ sequence, and; an opening shot. These seemingly disconnected fragments are recognised and become familiar through their repetition. The seduction of the gaps compels some form of narrative enactment by the viewer.
The tone of the work treads a line between fetish and restraint; between the sensual and the synthetic; between homemade bedroom aesthetics and the extravagant inhuman eye of cinematic camera movements.
“Utilising similar strategies to big budget American television shows, Collins uses edited sequences and repetitive theme music to trigger emotive responses in the viewer. As the artist explains, 'my research was concerned with 'points of transition' between fictive and reality spaces and how these spaces are constructed and marked/signed.'”
